It’s really creative and leaves a lot of room for you to explore, even if it does not seem that there is more than one way to solve the puzzle.Ī lot of the puzzle areas are plenty of fun, and even if I would be stumped for a little while, I never felt like the solution was completely out of my reach. It all makes sense, but then the game challenges you to combine body parts to get into all sorts of areas using the combination of the skills that they have. Losing your head makes you jump higher because you’re lighter, legs have the highest jump, arms are the best at climbing. It’s a lot of fun just for that, but then each body part has the capability to move in different ways.
This means ripping parts off and throwing, rolling, and maneuvering them into the right spots in order to get where you need to go. Like I mentioned, Bjørn has the ability to break off his body parts in order to solve the different forms of puzzles that he encounters while traveling. The best of these is in “Puzzle-con” (Yeah, it’s very self-aware about the puzzling,) where you can spend these coins to open up little bonus levels in the style of other games in a really loving homage to the aesthetic while still having the puzzle style of Helheim. Perhaps one of the most amazing parts of the game is unlocking bonuses by using a certain type of coin acquired by going off the beaten path and completing some of the side content. You only need to spend a little time with Allfather to totally get why Bjørn hates Valhalla. The voice acting really makes a lot of these moments, though, with every character being voiced. It’s that casual kind of humor that makes up most of the game, and you’re definitely going to get more out of this the more mythology that you know. A lot of the time it was a “yeah this is funny” without me actually laughing out loud. Not every joke lands, but that’s to be expected for this sort of thing. It’s a comedy romp through and through, with a silly premise and even sillier characters, but it all really works to make the game a fun time.

From there, it’s a trip through the afterlife full of myths, legends, jokes, puzzles, and even songs! Funny Bones Discovering that he has the ability to break apart and control different parts of his body just makes it all the easier to start on the road to Hel. However, accidentally falling to his death and killing a bear as he lands on it means that technically he died in battle with the bear and gets to go to Valhalla! Great, right? Well…ġ000 or so years later, Bjørn’s body is reanimated by living skeleton Pesto purely for the purpose of reading some Norse runes over the door to Helheim. Bjørn agrees to help for his own purpose of getting into Helheim to talk to the goddess of death Hel, hoping that he can get permission to stay in Helheim, because he absolutely hates Valhalla and has no intentions of going back. Helheim Hassle has you playing as Bjørn, a young viking lad who isn’t all that fussed with making it into Valhalla (viking heaven,) which requires falling in glorious combat in order to die, because only the weak, lame, old, and ill go to Helheim (viking hell.) So, when giants come to town and everyone is rushing to their death, including his own mother, Bjørn chooses to instead hide out in the woods until everything blows over. Yet again, my library has been graced with another chance to dive into the world of puzzle games with the Norse myth-themed Helheim Hassle.
The Switch has become my go-to puzzle console over the last few years thanks to the abundance of great indie puzzlers on the system.
